Firefox 4 Bug: Can't use to develop Dojo applications

Firefox 4 has been released last month and users around the globe was very happy of Firefox 4 being Fast, Customizable, Secure, and New UI. But it seems that all those attractive bright features had stolen Mozilla developers' attention from what the real Firefox advantage once used to be - its Firebug extension.

Firefox 4 was released with a bug in it. Basically the bug makes it impossible to use Firebug with Firefox 4 to develop Dojo applications. From discussion in the bug report it seems that Firefox 4 will never get fixed and JavaScript developers have to choose between using Firefox 3.6 (slow and clumsy) and switching to another browser until Firefox 5 becomes available.

This situation could seem surreal, but things get more clear with three facts in mind: Firefox is IBM's default browser, Firebug is sponsored by IBM, and Dojo is IBM's primary JavaScript platform.

Firefox 5 and New Channels for Firefox Rapid Releases

Mozilla  launched Aurora, a semi-stable dev build of Firefox.
Mozilla's always had nightly (Minefield) and beta builds that users could test drive, but Aurora adds a release that lives between the nightly build (now simply called Nightly) and the beta build. Aurora is a bleeding edge release that updates every six weeks, but it also undergoes some QA before updating, making Aurora more stable than Nightly—and a browser that power users might realistically use as their default.

Mozilla Firefox is moving to a rapid release development cycle to deliver new features, performance enhancements, security updates and stability improvements to users faster.

  • Nightly test builds – Includes features not tested by Mozilla QA
  • Firefox Beta – Broadly test the stability of new features and improvements in the next version of Firefox
  • Firefox Final Release – Delivers the polished and stable features in Firefox to hundreds of millions of users.
If your going to try downloading Aurora visit Firefox Channel - The Future of Firefox

Which Add-Ons Are Slowing Down Firefox

Slow Performing Add-ons

Add-ons provide many useful features and functions, but they can also cause Firefox to become slower. Some add-ons can even slow Firefox to a crawl and make it difficult to use for regular web browsing. If you think add-ons might be the reason Firefox is lethargic, check the list below for some of the biggest bottlenecks. And remember, for best performance you should disable add-ons that you no longer use regularly.

Add-ons with Slow Start-up

The following add-ons have a significant impact on how long it takes Firefox to start up.

Firefox Addon: RSS ICON

Great News for those love RSS. Adds the RSS Icon back into the Location Bar -- Bringing back the FF 3.X behavior.

RSS Icon 1.0.6 Specifically, when a page contains link tags in it's header with a type of application/atom+xml or application/rss+xml it places the orange RSS icon into the right side of the location bar (a.k.a. urlbar, awesomebar). If one and only one feed is detected, then clicking on the icon invokes your feed-handler (see about:config browser.feeds.handler). If multiple feeds are detected, it popups up a little menu to allow you to select which feed to add.

Install RSS Icon 1.0.6

Keep Track of CyanogenMod Nightly Builds

For those who are Cyanogen mod fans and who like to upgrade to the latest Nightly version, here is a great web site that searches the GITHUB commits and creates a webpage for each device with a summary of all changes applied to a certain nightly version.

Use the New Chrome Icon Before it Reaches the Stable Channel:

If you like the new chrome icon and can't wait for it to trickle down from the dev version, here is a link. It's a PNG so you can use it to convert to any format you may need.
